Sam’s father. Ian’s father died suddenly when he was Sam’s age. He is getting old, he cannot predict when his time will come, and seeing his son’s struggles makes him worry that he would not be able to be independent and handle how rough life can be alone. He doesn't understand his son’s struggles and doesn't know how to help. They argue about Sam’s performance at school and how little he interacts with people. Yet he loves his son, and feels immense guilt for not knowing how to help him

She also knows that despite the rough exterior of the father, he loves his son and wants the best for him
